What a frost advisory means
A Frost Advisory is issued by the National Weather Service when temperatures are expected to drop to around 33–36°F with calm winds and clear skies — conditions that allow frost to form on surfaces and sensitive plants. Frost can damage or kill tender vegetation, even when the air temperature never quite reaches freezing.
A Freeze Warning is more serious: it means sustained sub-freezing temperatures (generally 29–32°F or below) are likely, threatening crops, gardens, and unprotected plumbing. A Hard Freeze Warning (mid-20s or colder for several hours) typically ends the growing season outright.
NWS severity ladder for cold
- Frost Advisory — frost formation likely; protect tender plants.
- Freeze Watch — freezing temperatures possible in the next 24–48 hours.
- Freeze Warning — freezing temperatures expected; act to protect plants and pipes.
- Hard Freeze Warning — temperatures ≤ 24–28°F for hours; season-ending for most vegetation.
What to do when one is issued
- Cover or bring tender plants indoors overnight; remove covers after sunrise.
- Disconnect garden hoses; wrap or drip outdoor pipes to prevent freezing.
- Protect pets — bring them inside or provide insulated shelter.
- Check on neighbors, especially the elderly, once hard-freeze conditions arrive.
