frank strada

Search interest for Frank Strada increased following his announced resignation as Tennessee's prisons chief in the wake of a failed execution. Governor Bill Lee announced that Strada would step down later in the month after an attempted execution left death row inmate Christa Pike unconscious, on a ventilator, and critically ill in a hospital (Source: CNN, BBC).

Resignation and Independent Review

Strada's departure follows severe backlash over the handling of Christa Pike's scheduled lethal injection (Source: CNN). During the execution attempt, prison officials used at least seven needles to establish intravenous lines, and lawyers reported that Pike was heard crying and whimpering while receiving two doses of pentobarbital that failed to stop her heartbeat (Source: BBC). Governor Bill Lee suspended executions for the remainder of the year and retained former US attorney Ed Stanton to lead an independent review of the Department of Correction's actions (Source: CNN). Upon stepping down, Strada stated that leaving his position was in the best interest of Tennesseans while the independent review proceeds (Source: CNN).
